At it's essence, art is an alchemical process. Alchemy is a process of transformation. Julia Cameron
In Write Ways to Wellbeing I shared my own story of how writing brought healing and new direction to my life. This personal experience underpins my passion for writing as a tool for transformation, and as a pathway to self discovery and expression.
Today’s post is an introduction to the series: Writing Experiments to Transform Your Life. In this course you will conduct life writing experiments to find techniques that might uncover your personal gold (aka soulful joy). You will write to heal your past and discover threads of destiny. You will write to revel in your present moments, and you will write to vision preferred futures. You will uncover your soul treasure, so that you can ‘live your beautiful story and sing your heart’s true song.’ There are infinite kinds of beautiful lives. What will yours look like? What is the song of life that reverberates through you? Let’s write to find out.
Orientation
As you set off on this adventure, what can you expect? Firstly, this adventure will follow an experimental approach. Each lesson is an invitation to experiment and play. Give everything a go, and see what happens. I have found that it is often the activity I least expect, the one I feel cynical toward even, that ends up leading to the greatest transformation.
What is the purpose of this course? This is not just journalling and it is not just memoir, though it might include both of those. This course is designed to be transformative.
You will tinker in the alchemy lab. You will play with your writing and with the story of your life. And you will track discoveries along the way. Writing alchemy is both a science and an art. Some experiments will be artistic, others more scientific.
The scientific process of alchemy involves distinct (though cyclical) stages, and we will look at what each of these might mean for our writing, and for our lives.
Most lessons will include a story from my life (or from history, literature, or nature), followed by an invitation for you to experiment with your own life or writing, based on the example. But, don’t feel you have to follow my way of writing or doing things. Trust your own creativity to make everything your own. You will be invited to write and then to share in the comments if you wish. As always, I love to read pieces (or even fragments) inspired by these invitations.
In this adventure you will explore your wholeness, the beauty and sorrow of life, its ache and its amazement. Writing is a private space in which to explore your inner world, but if you find yourself moving into traumatic territory, or dredging up painful memories, you may benefit from the support of a therapist, or a friend. Monitor your feelings as you move through this course, and always prioritise self-care. 💛💙
Let’s Make a Start
Before we embark on these experiments, let’s get a picture of where you’re at right now - as a starting point against which to measure future change. We will begin by mapping the landscape of your current life.
For now, please keep your map, or landscape description, in a safe place. You will refer back to this later, to hopefully witness some amazing growth.
See you next time, when we will begin digging for fragments, facets and fractals.
